Does spring training matter?

Major League Baseball is now in its preseason, and the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues have started. Some sports analysts and fans have said how it doesn't matter how the teams do, as long as they do fine in the regular season. That may be true, however where do the new players learn the ropes and bond with other players? In the preseason. The preseason is where rookies beat out the vets for positions. Also this is where new players come and go.
